What Conway is like.

Conway is older than the beach. It was founded in 1732 as Kingston, became Conwayborough, and has been the seat of Horry County the whole time. It sits on the Waccamaw River about fourteen miles inland, which gives it something the coast does not have: a genuine downtown, a river running through it, and streets of historic homes under old trees. Coastal Carolina University is here as well, which keeps the town busier year-round than its size would suggest.

Living here

Downtown dinner, the riverwalk, and university events. Highway 501 runs straight to Myrtle Beach, and Highway 22 gets you to the north end quickly.

What you will find
  • Historic homes in and around the downtown district, plus newer subdivisions toward the edges
  • A revitalized Main Street with shops and restaurants, and a riverwalk along the Waccamaw
  • City Hall designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument, among several National Register buildings
  • Coastal Carolina University and the Horry County government offices
Before you buy here, check:
  • The Waccamaw River has produced serious flooding in past hurricane seasons. Flood zone, elevation certificate, and prior claims history matter more here than almost anywhere else on this list.
  • Properties in the historic district can carry review requirements for exterior changes. Ask before you plan a renovation.
  • You are about fourteen miles from the ocean. Conway is a river town rather than a beach town, and it lives like one.
